Fathom pricing, and the free plan nobody expects
Fathom has the most generous free tier in this market and we will say so plainly: unlimited recordings, unlimited transcriptions, AI summaries, no minute counter. The thing the price does not tell you is that a Fathom notetaker joins your call as a visible participant to capture it. Here is the full pricing, and where that bot matters.

Is Fathom free? More than most, and we will say so
Yes, and it is the most generous free tier of the four products on this page. Unlimited recordings, unlimited transcriptions, AI call summaries, clips, playlists and search across your calls. No minute counter, no per-call length cap.
What the free plan does not give you is the smarter layer on top: advanced summaries, AI-generated action items and the conversational assistant. Those start at Premium, $16 a month on annual billing.
There are two differences that have nothing to do with the price, and they are the honest reason to read on. The first is the bot. Fathom captures your meeting by sending a notetaker into it, and everyone on the call sees it sitting in the participant list. Fathom is building a bot-free mode, but as of September 2026 it is a limited beta, Mac only, handed out in batches, with Windows still to come. Unless you are in that beta, a bot joins your calls.
The second is where the audio goes. Fathom is a cloud product on every tier including the free one, so your meeting audio is uploaded to their servers to be processed. If both of those are fine for your work, Fathom free is an excellent deal and we will not pretend otherwise.

When Fathom is the right call
- You want the most capable free tier in this market, and a bot in the call does not bother you or your clients.
- You are on Windows, or you need a phone app. Ghosty Notes is macOS on Apple Silicon only.
- You run sales calls and want CRM sync, deal views and coaching scorecards.
- You want AI action items pulled out of the call automatically.
When $5 buys you something Fathom cannot
- Nothing may join the call. Ghosty Notes records your Mac's own audio, so the participant list shows only people.
- Your audio must not leave your machine. Transcription runs on the device, on every tier.
- You work in law, healthcare, finance or anywhere the recording itself is the sensitive thing.
- You want your notes as plain markdown files in a folder you chose, not rows in a service.
- You query your whole meeting history from Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Codex over MCP.
- You want to keep working with no internet connection.

- Is the Fathom notetaker free?
- Yes, and unusually so. The free plan gives unlimited recordings and transcriptions, AI call summaries, clips, playlists and search, with no minute allowance and no per-call cap. Advanced summaries, AI action items and the meeting assistant are the paid additions. The free plan captures your call the same way the paid ones do, by sending a notetaker bot into the meeting.
- What is the difference between Fathom Premium and Team?
- Premium is for one person. Team is the same thing for 2 or more people and adds global search across everyone's calls, shared playlists, comments, folders and keyword alerts. Team is slightly cheaper per seat than Premium.
- Does Fathom put a bot in my meeting?
- Yes. The Fathom notetaker joins your Zoom, Google Meet or Teams call and appears in the participant list, and that is how it captures the meeting. Fathom has a bot-free capture mode, but as of September 2026 it is a limited beta on Mac only, rolled out to users in batches, with Windows support still to come. Ghosty Notes records your Mac's own audio instead, so nothing ever joins the call.
- Does Fathom process my audio in the cloud?
